Do I need a referral?
A referral from your GP or another healthcare provider is recommended to access Medicare rebates for your consultation and any associated procedures. However, you are welcome to contact the clinic directly to discuss your appointment and referral requirements. If you are unsure whether you need a referral, our friendly team will be happy to assist you.
What happens during a colposcopy?
A colposcopy is a simple procedure used to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva using a specialised microscope called a colposcope. It is commonly recommended after an abnormal cervical screening result or if further assessment is needed.
During the procedure, you will lie comfortably on an examination bed similar to a routine pelvic examination. A speculum is gently inserted into the vagina so the cervix can be clearly seen. The colposcope remains outside the body and allows your specialist to view the area under magnification.
A mild solution may be applied to the cervix to highlight any abnormal cells. If an area requires further assessment, a small biopsy (tissue sample) may be taken. Some women experience mild cramping or slight discomfort during the biopsy, but the procedure is generally well tolerated.
A colposcopy usually takes around 15–30 minutes, and most patients can return to normal daily activities afterwards. If a biopsy is performed, you may notice light spotting for a few days.
At Bloom Gynaecare, we understand that intimate examinations can feel stressful. Our team is committed to providing gentle, respectful, and compassionate care to help you feel informed and comfortable throughout your appointment
How do I prepare for surgery?
Preparing for surgery is an important part of ensuring a safe procedure and smooth recovery. Before your operation, you will receive detailed instructions tailored to your treatment and individual health needs.
In general, patients are advised to:
Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery
Stop eating and drinking for the recommended period before your procedure
Inform your specialist about any medications, allergies, or medical conditions
Discuss any blood thinners, vitamins, or supplements you are taking
Wear comfortable clothing and avoid jewellery, makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery
You may also be asked to complete pre-operative tests such as blood tests, imaging, or medical clearance from your GP or other specialists.
It is completely normal to feel nervous before surgery. At Bloom Gynaecare, we take the time to explain your procedure, answer your questions, and ensure you feel informed and supported every step of the way. Our focus is on providing safe, personalised care in a calm and compassionate environment.
Can I bring a support person?
Yes — you are welcome to bring a support person to your appointment or procedure whenever possible. We understand that gynaecological consultations and treatments can sometimes feel personal or overwhelming, and having someone you trust with you can provide reassurance and comfort.
Your support person may accompany you during discussions and, in many cases, during examinations or procedures if appropriate. In some situations, such as certain surgical or hospital procedures, there may be temporary restrictions for privacy or clinical reasons, and our team will guide you accordingly.
At Bloom Gynaecare, we are committed to creating a supportive, respectful, and comfortable experience for every patient.
What should I expect during menopause consultation?
A menopause consultation is designed to provide personalised support, guidance, and treatment options to help you manage symptoms and maintain your long-term health and wellbeing.
During your appointment, your specialist will take the time to discuss your symptoms, medical history, menstrual changes, lifestyle, and any concerns you may have. Common symptoms discussed may include hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, sleep disturbances, weight changes, vaginal dryness, or reduced energy levels.
Your consultation may also include:
A review of your current medications and general health
Discussion of hormone therapy and non-hormonal treatment options
Assessment of bone, heart, and overall health risks
Recommendations for lifestyle, nutrition, and wellbeing support
Further investigations or blood tests if needed
Every woman experiences menopause differently, so your care plan will be tailored to your individual needs and preferences.
